Bounded size components--partitions and transversals
Answering a question of Alon, Ding, Oporowski and Vertigan [4], we show that there exists an absolute constant C such that every graph G with maximum degree 5 has a vertex partition into 2 parts, such that the subgraph induced by each part has no component of size greater than C. We obtain similar results for partitioning graphs of given maximum degree into k parts (k > 2) as well. A related th...
متن کاملBounded transversals in multipartite graphs
Transversals in r-partite graphs with various properties are known to have many applications in graph theory and theoretical computer science. We investigate f -bounded transversals (or f -BT), that is, transversals whose connected components have order at most f . In some sense we search for the the sparsest f -BT-free graphs. We obtain estimates on the smallest maximum degree that 3-partite a...
متن کاملCycle transversals in bounded degree graphs
In this work we consider the problem of finding a minimum Ck-transversal (a subset of vertices hitting all the induced chordless cycles with k vertices) in a graph with bounded maximum degree. In particular, we seek for dichotomy results as follows: for a fixed value of k, finding a minimum Ck-transversal is polynomial-time solvable if k ≤ p, and NP -hard otherwise.
متن کاملExtremal Problems For Transversals In Graphs With Bounded Degree
We introduce and discuss generalizations of the problem of independent transversals. Given a graph property R, we investigate whether any graph of maximum degree at most d with a vertex partition into classes of size at least p admits a transversal having property R. In this paper we study this problem for the following properties R: “acyclic”, “H-free”, and “having connected components of orde...
متن کاملDual-bounded generating problems: weighted transversals of a hypergraph
We consider a generalization of the notion of transversal to a finite hypergraph, so called weighted transversals. Given a non-negative weight vector assigned to each hyperedge of an input hypergraph A and a nonnegative threshold vector, we define a weighted transversal as a minimal vertex set which intersects all the hyperedges of A except for a subfamily of total weight not exceeding the give...
